Student Affairs Welcome to the Office of the Dean of Students The Office of the Dean of Students staff serves as a liaison between students, parents, faculty, university staff and administrators to: assist with individual or group crisis; navigate campus procedures; and serve as an advocate for students, when needed. The office is the primary contact for individuals who need assistance identifying the appropriate resources available to them. In an effort to meet the individual needs of our students, the Center for Counseling and Student Development, the Department for Disability Support Services, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, Student Legal Services, and the Student Health Services join with the Dean of Students to provide comprehensive student services and thematic programming that emphasizes personal, emotional and academic development. These departments work in partnership with the Office of the Dean of Students by responding pro-actively to crisis, safety, wellness and access matters. Collectively, we are committed to helping every member of our community to succeed. The East Carolina University Dean of Students Office is the central campus resource for addressing student complaints and inquires. Staff Members are available to discuss both general and specific questions, as well as any concerns about university life, transitional issues, policies, procedures and university services to include: support with academic, personal, or social issues and concerns; assisting with adjustment to university life; and support in the event of any personal, medical, or family emergency. The student will be given a written warning and the specific disruptive behavior exhibited will be documented on the Handling Disruption in Learning Environments form.

The instructor discusses further consequences for the student should the behavior continue. The student will receive a copy, a copy will be kept as part of their files, and the original document will be forwarded to the department head.

Low-level disruption in classrooms: below the radar

What to do following a disruption While many disruptions are minor and can be managed in the moment, it can be beneficial both to document the incident and follow up with the student. Documenting what you experienced and the steps you took will be helpful if you need to pursue a violation of the student conduct code. Clear communication with the student helps to set expectations and prevent further disruption.

For minor disruptions, an email can serve as both a tool to remedy behavior and to document the incident. They dematerialize what was once physical and create new products and revenue streams in months, sometimes weeks. This disruption is filled with opportunity for forward-thinking entrepreneurs.

This growth cycle takes place in six key steps, which Peter Diamandis calls the Six Ds of Exponentials: digitization, deception, disruption, demonetization, dematerialization, and democratization.

Before you know it, something that was once expensive and physical is an app that costs a buck. The entertainment and media industries are still dealing with the aftermath of digitization as they attempt to transform and update old practices tailored to a bygone era.

As more of the economy is digitized—from medicine to manufacturing—industries will hop on an exponential curve and be similarly disrupted. That same year, Facebook acquired Instagram, a digital photo sharing app, which at the time was a startup with 13 employees.
